“Irlanda”… 1693 . by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650 – 1718)… 50″ x 38” (124 cms x 94 cms)…original full hand colour… Coronelli published both these maps ( Parte settentrionale dell’ Irlanda descritta and Irlanda Parte Meridionale ) in Venice in 1693. It is very rare to find both maps in such fine condition. Coronelli achieved fame as a mathematician, cartographer and globe maker. He was appointed Father General of the Franciscan Order in 1699 and served as “Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic”. He is credited with founding the first geographical society “L’Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti”. He is believed to have produced over 500 maps including those in his 13 volume “Atlante Veneto” (1691 -1696). Many of the more important maps were engraved on two sheets, to allow greater detail. This two sheet map of Ireland is a wonderful embodiment of his skill and attention to detail. The maps are in very good condition. Ref. Map 31
